DSA tests

DSA tests are driving tests conducted by a Government Agency called the Driving Standards Agency.
For learner car drivers there are two DSA tests that have to be passed before you can become a fully qualified driver. These tests have to be taken in the correct order to obtain your full driving licence.

1. A DSA theory test combined with a hazard perception test.
2. A DSA practical driving test.

You must pass the theory test & hazard perception test at the same time before you can apply to take your driving test. It is recommended by the DSA that you do not take your theory test until you have had around 20 hours driving tuition. If you take your theory test to early there is a chance that your pass certificate might expire because you only have two years after passing your theory to pass your practical test.

A long time you might think but life seems to get in the way and you would be surprised how many people have an expired theory test certificate. The latest figures from the DSA suggest that 25,000 people a year do not even get to sit their practical test after passing their theory test. A good driving instructor will teach you your theory alongside your driving lessons, which is why the DSA tests are structured in that format.

Here is a statement on the official DSA website that is totally misleading to the general public & a few driving instructors.

The theory test is made up of a multiple choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass it. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test.

To me that implies that you can take your practical test as soon as you have passed your theory. What if you have only had 5 driving lessons?

I have met many students & their parents who thought because the theory test has been passed then you must be ready for the driving test. Couldn't be further from the truth. These two DSA tests can be compared to 'chalk & cheese'. The theory test does not help you pass the driving test at all, especially if you have only memorised the answers to the questions, rather than learn the subject.

Professional training for all DSA tests

On all of the top intensive driving courses nervous students are treated with patience by myself (I do not employ other driving instructors or contract work out). I am both a professional Life Coach and Driving Instructor Coach

Over one million drivers take their driving test every year. Over 500,000 drivers fail their driving test first time. If the driving test was treated as school or college exams, in terms of results, then there would be a lot to answer for in our education system. Most students who have one lesson each week take over 18 months to learn to drive. Learning to drive need not take over a year to learn, especially with an intensive driving course. Pupils are more likely to fail their driving test the longer they take to learn to drive if their driving lessons are few and far between.
