Eco diversion routes can help to shorten your travel time when you are diverted off a motorway or other road because of an accident or major road works.

What are eco diversion routes

Eco diversion routes are symbols that you can follow to get you back onto your route when you are diverted due to a major incident blocking your road. Following the appropriate symbol will bring you back onto your route in the shortest possible time available for the area you are in.

Before the creation of eco diversion route symbols you had to look at your map and try and work around the road blockage in front of you. The route you may have looked at might not necessarily have been the shortest or safest, especially if you are towing a caravan or driving a lorry.

Here is the eco diversion route method

You look out for a sign that says Glasgow and next to it you will see one of the symbols shown below. All you have to do now is follow the symbol that was next to the Glasgow sign and you will be directed back onto the M6 at the first available opportunity. You keep following your symbol, because you may not see a sign for Glasgow again until you are back onto the motorway.
