Full Intensive Driving Courses

Which full intensive driving course »

Full intensive driving courses can be booked all the year around subject to availability. The Full intensive driving course is usually over 40 hours long & spread over 7 days. You can actually learn to drive in 7 days on this course, but not be quite ready for the driving test, but drive you will.

The old image of intensive driving courses was that you could take your first driving lesson on Monday and pass your driving test the following Friday is almost impossible to do know for the average learner driver unless they have a background in farming, engineering or other like discipline.

Note! Even though these courses are classed as Full intensive driving courses they are still not long enough to get you test ready. From the start of your driving lessons you will need to have 55 to 60 driving lessons. After these full intensive courses you will be driving fairly well, but not ready for your driving test that will take more time for the information to be processed and practised

Learner drivers who have never had previous driving lessons can give their driving career a great start by booking a full intensive driving course of 40 hours or 50 hours. Your driving lessons on either course can be spread out over 10 days if required or they can be taken in as few as 7 days for the 40 hour course & 7 days + 3 days for the 50 hour course.

When you first start your driving lessons as a new learner driver it is in your best interest to have your driving lessons as close together as possible. There is a lot of new information that you will be learning on your driving course and the best way to retain this new knowledge is to have your driving lessons as close together as you can.

Full intensive driving courses 40 hour course

Your 40 hour course usually starts at 10.00am through to 12.30pm. You then have a short break & re-start around 1.00pm through to 3.30pm [over 7 days]. If you prefer to learn to drive over fewer days then your hours would be adjusted accordingly.

What will you learn in 40 hours?
On your full intensive driving course you should be able to carry out the following tasks.

  • Understand your setting up procedure to drive a specific car, that is usually remembered by the letters D.S.S.S.M
  • Drive away from the kerb smoothly using a process known by the letters P.O.(S).M
  • Stop the car safely & smoothly in a parking position close to the kerb
  • Drive off on an uphill gradient, downhill gradient & flat road smoothly
  • Turn left from a minor road into a major road (not a main road, but more major than your minor road)
  • Turn right from a minor road into a major road (not a main road, but more major than your minor road)
  • Turn left from a major road into a minor road (not a main road, but more major than your minor road)
  • Turn right from a major road into a minor road (not a main road, but more major than your minor road)
  • Changing gear up from 1st to 2nd to 3rd (possibly 4th if the roads permit you to)
  • Changing gear down from 3rd to 2nd to 1st (possibly down from 4th if the roads permit you to)
  • If you have a mini roundabout handy, you could practise turning right & left.
  • If you have a quiet traffic light handy you could practise driving through them
  • Main road practise & larger roundabouts including multi lanes
  • Yellow box junctions & busier traffic lights
  • All the above processes will need to be repeated throughout your course until you feel that you have grasped the concepts taught.
  • At least 3 manouvres
  • Extensive practise in all situations including the emergency stop & show me tell me questions
  • If you are coming on well with your training you might even get to do a mock driving test

Most of the exercises written above can be achieved within 40 driving lessons but some may not happen due to many reasons, but that is the 40 hour lesson plan for new drivers. To learn all of the above would take around 12 to 18 months at one driving lesson per week (it takes longer than the 10 months expected because you have to re-cap every lesson)

Up to date intensive driving courses for the new driving test

The type of intensive driving course you will need depends on many factors including your ability to absorb new information and the previous driving lessons you have taken already. How long ago were your lessons and the standard of driver training you received from your driving instructor are also influencing factors. It will not be until I meet you that an accurate assessment can be made but you do need to make some sort of decision at this stage. I have written below a few guidelines to help get you started.

If you are not sure how many driving lessons you will need after reading the notes below you should either contact me with a few of your details, such as past driving experience and how long ago. I could then give you some idea as to the type of intensive driving course that would best suit you.

You could also book a two hour driving lesson assessment prior to booking a course. We could then discuss a way forward for your driving test.
